Geography Bee Study Guide:

A.   Bodies of Water
a.   A lake is a large, inland body of water.
b.   A tributary is a smaller river that flows into an ocean, lake, or river.
c.   A gulf is a large area of sea or ocean that is partially enclosed by land.  A bay is the same thing but is generally smaller.
d.   The Ohio River was known as the “gateway to the west.”
e.   The Columbia River was explored by Lewis and Clark.
f.    The Colorado River was explored by Francisco Coronado and the Spanish.
g.   The Rio Grande forms part of the border between Texas and Mexico.
h.   The St. Lawrence River forms part of the northeastern border with Canada and connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean.
B.   Landforms
a.   A plain is a large, flat area of land.
b.   A plateau is a large, relatively flat, but elevated area of land.
c.   A peninsula is a piece of land that is surrounded by water on three sides.
C.   Colonies
a.   Roanoke Island is off the coast of North Carolina.
b.   Jamestown is located on the Virginia coast.
c.   Plymouth Colony is located in Massachusetts.
d.   New England has a jagged coastline and many excellent harbors.
e.   The Southern colonies had a warm, humid climate and are located on the Atlantic Coastal Plain.
f.    The Proclamation of 1763 did not allow the colonists to west of the Appalachian Mountains.
g.   Boston is a large city located in Massachusetts.
D.  Regions
a.   The Coastal Range contains rugged mountains and fertile valleys.
b.   The Basin and Range includes Death Valley, the lowest point in North America.
c.   The Appalachian Mountains are the oldest mountain range in North America.  They contain old, eroded mountains.
d.   The Coastal Plain contains many excellent harbors.
E.   Native Americans
a.   The Kwakiutl lived on the Pacific Northwest Coast, which has a rainy, mild climate.
b.   The Inuit lived in Alaska and Northern Canada, which has an arctic climate.
c.   The Pueblo lived in the southwest United States (New Mexico and Arizona), which has an arid climate.
d.   The Lakota lived on the Great Plains, which is mostly dry grasslands.
e.   The Iroquois lived in the Eastern Woodlands in the Northeastern United States, which has many forests.
F.   Miscellaneous
a.   Cactus Hill is located in Southeastern Virginia near the Nottoway River.
b.   Robert La Salle explored the Mississippi River Valley.
c.   The Constitution was written in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
d.   Washington, D.C. is the nation’s capital.
e.   Four of the first five presidents were from Virginia.
f.    Richmond, VA was the capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War.
g.   Savannah, GA; Charleston, SC; and New Orleans, LA were three important port cities in the south during the Civil War.
h.   Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia were all Confederate states during the Civil War.
i.     Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, and West Virginia were border states during the Civil War.
